The
canyon represents a spectacular natural phenomenon which took hundreds
of millions of years to evolve. A conservation area of
346 177
hectar and at a length of
161 km, breadth of
27 km and
depth of
550 metres, it is the
largest canyon in Africa and
the
second largest canyon in the world, conquered only by
the Grand Canyon in the U.S.A. The most spectacular section is
the 56 km stretch between the most nothern and southern viewpoints
and the 90 km canyon trail is regarded as one of southern Africa's major
challenges.
