The Lüderitz area
is home to a wide variety of aquatic birds. Large numbers of flamingos,
cormorants and seagulls inhabit the shallow lagoon. The sheer isolation
and the distinctly German colonial architecture of Lüderitz
and Kolmanskop, once the focal point of a glittering diamond
rush, bears witness to one of the most vivid periods in Namibian
history.
The Lüderitz Peninsula is characterised by numerous bays, lagoons
and unspoilt stretches of beach. At Diaz Point a replica of Bartolomeu's
Padrao can be seen, while a plaque on Shark Island commemorates the
German merchant, Adolf Lüderitz. At Sturmvogelbucht the remains
of an old Norwegian whaling station can be seen.
The Sperrgebiet and
the Bogenfels: The Diamond Area south of Lüderitz is
rocky coast and desert with acces to features such as the Bogenfels
Rock Arch (55 m high rock arch which juts into the sea), the Atlas
Bay fur seal colony and old diamond diggings and ghost towns representing
former endeavours of German poineers.
