The Kuiseb
River and Gobabeb: A dry river bed with underground
water which is part of the water resource for the coastal towns
and the Rössing Urananium Mine restrains the sand
dunes towards the south, being their natural border. The Hottentots "Topnaars" live
here. The Desert Ecological Research Unit (DERU) was founded
in 1959 and provides scientists with a unique natural laboratory
at Gobabeb.
Tsondabvlei is the only known breeding area of the Lappet Faced
Vulture in southern Namibia, and prohibited for visitors.
Sossusvlei: No
part of the desert is visually more stunning than Sossusvlei, with it's
monumentally high dunes (up to 325m high). The warm tints of the sand,
form pale apricot to brick orange and deep red, vividly contrasting with
the large white clay pans at some of their bases and the shadows of their
sinuous crests continually change as the day progresses.
The Diamond Camps: Today it seems incomprehensible to what length
people went in order to mine these sparkling gemstones. The three diamond
camps bear witness to these activities which started in 1903. Captains
possibly mistook fires of the former diamond mines for navigation fires,
and stranded.
